This project analyzes isotopes in animal and human bones from archaeological sites in Italy to understand past climates, diets, and migration patterns. It focuses on the Upper Palaeolithic and Mesolithic periods, using multi-isotope approaches to reconstruct human ecology before agriculture.
In recent years, the ratios of isotopes of a number of different chemical elements (carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, sulphur, strontium and lead) have been measured on animal and human skeletal materials to gain information on past climate, ecology and diet.
