This project investigates the role of adult stem cells in tissue maintenance and aging. It focuses on how the stem cell niche and asymmetric cell division contribute to stem cell function and longevity, aiming to uncover mechanisms that could mitigate age-related tissue decline.
Adult stem cells maintain tissues for the life of an organism by balancing regeneration with tissue damage and turnover.
Accordingly, the functional decline associated with aging is hypothesized to result from the reduced net stem cell function.
