This project investigates the biological roles of rhomboid proteases by identifying their natural substrates in bacteria and mammals. Using advanced techniques, it aims to uncover the mechanisms of these enzymes, which could lead to new therapeutic inhibitors for diseases linked to rhomboid function.
Rhomboids are widely conserved intramembrane proteases.
They are known to control important biological processes in model insect, worm, yeast and protozoan species, but their functions in most organisms including mammals and bacteria are unknown.
