This project investigates the factors influencing the switch of HIV-1 variants from using the CCR5 receptor to the CXCR4 receptor, which is associated with disease progression. It will analyze immune activation and viral characteristics in different cohorts to understand the mechanisms behind this switch.
HIV-1 variants utilizing CCR5 (R5) are predominant during early infection, emergence of CXCR4 (X4) strains typically occurs later.
Although R5 to X4 switch is strongly correlated with increased rates of disease progression, it remains largely unknown which factors are causing the switch.
