This project investigates how neuronal activity influences the local translation of messenger RNA at synapses, which is crucial for memory formation. By studying the role of specific proteins in Drosophila, the research aims to uncover the molecular mechanisms underlying synaptic plasticity.
During learning specific neuronal connections are strengthened and weakened to create long-term memory.
This requires local regulation of the availability of proteins at the synapse, at a large distance from the cell body, in response to neuronal activity.
