This research aims to uncover the mechanisms of synaptic pruning in the brain using organotypic hippocampal slice cultures. It focuses on identifying molecular signals that distinguish between synapses during development, with implications for understanding neurodevelopmental disorders and mental illnesses.
While emerging body of evidence implicates microglia in synaptic pruning and indicates the role of complement system in mediating phagocytosis of synaptic elements by surrounding microglia, no neuronal signals that label synapses according to their activity and maturity have been identified yet.
