This project explores how we understand new sentences and the nature of meaningfulness by integrating theories of intentionality and productivity. It aims to develop a predictive teleosemantic theory of language that combines insights from psychology and formal semantics.
How can we understand sentences we’ve never heard before?
What distinguishes meaningful things from nonmeaningful things?
These questions pose the problems of productivity and intentionality, respectively.
These questions have typically been addressed independently.
