This project investigates the genetic variability of the Hepatitis C virus in HIV co-infected patients to understand its impact on treatment resistance. It aims to clone specific viral sequences to enhance the development of effective therapies.
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major cause of premature death due to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma in a large proportion of the world population (>25 million).
Recently, advances in the development of new therapeutic compounds to treat HCV have revealed several potent inhibitors of the HCV serine protease, which have reached clinical trials.
