The Aphrodito archive project aims to translate and analyze documents from an early Islamic administrative archive. By making these texts accessible, it seeks to explore the local impact of the Umayyad Caliphate and the dynamics of power and negotiation in early medieval societies.
Named ‘Aphrodito archive’ because it originates in that otherwise unremarkable Middle-Egyptian town, the most important papyrological archive of the early Caliphate contains the papers of an early-eighth-century district administrator,
