This project explores antiviral RNA interference in mammals, particularly how the DICER enzyme processes viral RNA. It aims to determine if antiviral RNA interference can be activated in differentiated cells, which may enhance understanding of viral defenses.
In antiviral RNAi, the DICER (DCR) enzyme processes virus-derived double-stranded (ds)RNA into siRNAs that guide ARGONAUTE proteins to silence complementary viral RNA.
As a counter-defense, viruses deploy viral suppressors of RNAi (VSRs).
