This project investigates the relationship between gut microbiota and the intestinal barrier in metabolic diseases like obesity and diabetes. It aims to understand how changes in microbial composition affect the production and function of antimicrobial peptides that protect the gut lining.
Obesity is a world-wide epidemic and currently about 350 million people suffer from diabetes, resulting in more than 3 million deaths per year.
While the gut microbiota has been identified as a contributing factor to obesity and insulin resistance in mice and humans, the underlying disease-causing mechanisms are yet to be defined.
