This project investigates the role of thyroid hormones in regulating appetite and energy balance, particularly in the context of obesity. It aims to identify genes influenced by thyroid hormones that contribute to metabolic syndrome.
Obesity is a global epidemic.
The number of people who are obese or overweight increases annually.
Being obese or overweight significantly increases the risk of co-morbidities that are currently amongst the major health problems of modern times, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease, collectively known as the metabolic syndrome.
Currently 2-7% of European healthcare budgets are consumed addressing health problems arising from excess body weight, and this is predicted to increase.
