This project explores the motivations behind the construction of the Medieval Wall System in China, analyzing its political and ecological implications. It challenges the traditional view of Great Walls as military defenses, suggesting they were built to manage nomadic movements during ecological stress.
Why did some (but not all) Chinese dynasties invest huge amount of resources in the construction of Great Walls?
