This project focuses on developing small molecule inhibitors called TRAF-STOPs to target the CD40-CD40L signaling pathway, which plays a significant role in atherosclerosis. The goal is to create an oral drug that effectively reduces atherosclerosis without the side effects associated with long-term immune suppression.
Atherosclerosis, the underlying cause of the majority of cardiovascular diseases, is a lipid driven, inflammatory disease ofthe large arteries.
Despite a 25% relative risk reduction achieved by lipid-lowering treatment, the vast majority ofatherosclerosis induced cardiovascular disease risk remains unaddressed.
Therefore, characterizing mediators of theinflammatory aspect of atherosclerosis is a widely recognized scientific goal with great therapeutic implications.
