This project seeks to develop a method for converting adult human cells into insulin-producing beta cells through the expression of specific transcription factors. This approach aims to address the shortage of donor organs for diabetes treatment.
Type 1 diabetes mellitus affects an estimated 0,5% of the world population.
Autoimmune rejection results in destruction of the insulin producing beta cells of the pancreas, leading to both acute and long term complications.
