This project investigates the social legitimacy of universal versus selective welfare policies by analyzing cross-national, experimental, and longitudinal data. It aims to clarify when and why one policy design garners more public support than the other, contributing to discussions on the future of welfare systems.
Throughout the years, it has become conventional wisdom in social policy literature that universal policies, accessible to all citizens/residents, enjoy higher levels of popular support than selective policies targeted at the poor only.
