This project investigates the exceptional strength and toughness of pearlitic steel wires, aiming to understand the architectural features that contribute to their properties. The goal is to design new nano-composite materials with improved strength and ductility for engineering applications.
The theoretical strength of metals and ceramics is about 10% of their Young’s modulus.
Although whiskers reach strength values close to this limit they cannot be used in the design of load bearing structures.
Currently the typical strength of the structural materials in use is only in the range of few % of this theoretical limit.
Premature plastic deformation and failure due to flaws are the main reasons for this distinctive lower limit.
