The VEAT-chip project aims to create a human model of epicardial adipose tissue to study its role in cardiovascular diseases. By integrating stem cells and advanced technologies, it seeks to understand how hormonal changes affect heart health and disease.
Obesity-associated metabolic and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are serious public health concerns. A fat depot surrounding the heart, known as epicardial adipose tissue (EAT), is likely contributing to the pathologic conditions leading to CVDs.
But it might also play a protective role during ischaemic events highlighting a complex role of EAT in heart homeostasis and disease.
