This project studies the transition from grasslands to shrublands in dry environments, focusing on the factors driving desertification. It aims to develop a framework for predicting vegetation shifts and understanding ecosystem changes in semi-arid regions.
Climate change and the massive alteration of natural habitats are major drivers of land degradation.
Their effects may be especially significant in drylands, where ecosystems are particularly sensitive to degradation, usually involving irreversible landscape changes (i.e. desertification).
