This project investigates how the immune system tolerates the semi-allogenic fetus during pregnancy. By examining regulatory T cells at the maternal-fetal interface, it seeks to uncover mechanisms that could inform treatments for conditions like recurrent miscarriage and organ transplantation.
The presence of foreign (allogenic) tissue in a host yields an immune response with the goal to destroy the tissue.
During pregnancy, however, the semiallogenic fetus is allowed to grow within the maternal uterus.
