The project investigates the cultural transition in Sicily from Greek to Latin influences during the Middle Ages. It focuses on the role of the Latin Church and aims to produce a reference edition of Greek charters and a historical monograph to enhance understanding of this transformation.
During Antiquity, Sicily was a part of Magna Graecia and was still a hub of Greek civilisation under the Byzantine Empire.
After being taken over by the Arabs (9th c.) and then by the Normans (11th c.), Greek culture continued to thrive.
However, by 1200, Sicily had undergone a near-complete Latinisation.
