This project explores the evolution of song in songbirds, focusing on the loss of song in females. By analyzing song structure and its ecological correlates, the research aims to understand the dynamics of sexual dimorphism and the factors influencing trait loss in female songbirds.
Males and females often differ dramatically in phenotype, with one sex exhibiting elaborate ornaments absent in the other.
Darwin suggested such dimorphism evolves through sexual selection on males to attract females and repel rival males.
