The project focuses on developing the first continuous nuclear demagnetization refrigerator, capable of maintaining temperatures below 1 millikelvin indefinitely. This technology aims to facilitate research in quantum computing and fundamental physics without the need for liquid helium.

This cryogenic advance has driven an explosion in industrial efforts to build quantum computers based on superconducting qubits as well as rapid progress in fundamental physics experiments around 10 mK.
